Fitting glass sliding walls is an excellent way to turn your terrace canopy into a fully fledged garden room, so you can enjoy your garden all year round. Many customers wonder how long the installation takes and what it involves. In this article we explain the whole process step by step, so you know exactly what to expect.

The average installation time

In most cases, fitting glass sliding walls takes one to two working days. The exact time depends heavily on a few factors: the width of the canopy, the number of tracks (and panels) required, and the condition of the existing foundation. Good preparation is half the work and largely determines how quickly the installation goes.

Step 1: Preparation and foundation

The single most important step for a perfectly working sliding wall is a completely level and solid foundation. Because safety glass is extremely heavy, the bottom track must lie perfectly flat. If the track system is even a millimetre out of true or sagging, the panels will run heavily or sit askew. Our fitters follow these steps:

• Accurate measurement and inspection of the existing surface (such as tiles, concrete or decking).

• Fitting and levelling the aluminium foundation profile, where required for stability.

• Levelling across the full width using advanced laser equipment.

Step 2: Fitting the track system and draught profiles

Once the foundation is perfectly level, we fix the bottom track firmly to the ground. The top track is then mounted precisely. Finally the aluminium U-profiles are fitted against the walls to keep out draughts and rain.

Step 3: Fitting the safety glass

The heaviest work is carrying and fitting the glass panels (10 mm toughened safety glass). Each panel is carefully placed on the bottom track and tilted into the top track. The carriages under the glass are then adjusted for smooth running.
